No mechanical implant failures (i.e. fractures) have been documented. In contrast, bi-modular primary and revision hip systems with necks and stems made of ti tanium-aluminium-vanadium alloy (Ti alloy) have shown fracture rates of up to 2.4% due to corrosion without any previous biological responses (Grupp et al. 2010, Norman et al. 2014). Taper fractures of primary Ti alloy THA stems with a modular head taper have not been reported in the literature, but major taper corrosion and material loss have been found for one design in particular (Witt et al. 2014). We present 3 cases of stem taper fracture as the ultimate failure mode of this design.

Corrosion on the acetabular liner taper from retrieved modular metal-on-metal total hip replacements.
Eight retrieved metal-on-metal total hip replacements displayed corrosion damage along the cobalt-chromium alloy liner taper junction with the Ti alloy acetabular shell. Scanning electron microscopy indicated the primary mechanism of corrosion to be grain boundary and associated crevice corrosion, which was likely accelerated through mechanical micromotion and galvanic corrosion resulting from ...
متن کاملBead debonding from a modern cementless total hip femoral component with concomitant taper corrosion
We report a case of bead shedding from a cylindrical extensively porous-coated cementless femoral component with concomitant taper corrosion at the modular head-neck junction of a metal-on-polyethylene total hip prosthesis. The patient presented with chronic thigh pain 4 years after primary total hip arthroplasty, and radiographs revealed significant osteolysis and metallic debris around the fe...
متن کاملStem fracture of a collarless, polished, double-taper cemented femoral prosthesis: a case report.
We report a case of stem fracture of a collarless, polished, double-taper cemented stainless steel femoral prosthesis. Scanning electron microscopy showed fatigue striations, indicating failure by fatigue. This case study highlights that stem fracture can still occur with modern implants. Size 0 CPT stem should be avoided in patients with high body mass index. To our knowledge this is the first...
متن کاملA combined experimental and finite element approach to analyse the fretting mechanism of the head–stem taper junction in total hip replacement
Fretting corrosion at the taper interface of modular hip implants has been implicated as a possible cause of implant failure. This study was set up to gain more insight in the taper mechanics that lead to fretting corrosion. The objectives of this study therefore were (1) to select experimental loading conditions to reproduce clinically relevant fretting corrosion features observed in retrieved...
متن کاملRetrieval analysis of metal and ceramic femoral heads on a single CoCr stem design
OBJECTIVES The use of ceramic femoral heads in total hip arthroplasty (THA) has increased due to their proven low bearing wear characteristics. Ceramic femoral heads are also thought to reduce wear and corrosion at the head-stem junction with titanium (Ti) stems when compared with metal heads. We sought to evaluate taper damage of ceramic compared with metal heads when paired with cobalt chromi...
